What happens when 3 Japanese giants collaborate? Well they end up producing system chips with circuitry the width of 45 nanometers if reports on the internet are to be believed. Sony, Toshiba and NEC Electronics have agreed to begin manufacturing the cutting-edge chips by around 2010. However in an unexpected statement, this was denied by the electronic giants who said "We have no intention of joint production," a Sony representative said. "We make products ourselves, and if our capacity is not sufficient, we can turn to outside suppliers."
According to sources while Toshiba and NEC Electronics may carry out a joint venture, Sony wants no part in the production of 45-nanometer chips. This comes as a surprise because last month all the three companies announced their plans to work together in the production sharing costs and pooling technological expertise. While finer circuitry decreases the size of a chip and makes it more cost effective and functional, to develop it will require a company to make big investments.
