The much awaited upgrade to Fedora Core has finally been released and as a Linux Engineer, I really can't wait to download anything new related to Linux.
The Fedora Core 5 (FC5) now comes with a more user friendly interface and the boot manager partitioning screens have seen some refreshment and a much needed change. Installation is done through the renowned Anaconda installer which makes the whole process a walk in the park. On boot up, the system works faster and only hogs about 95 MB of memory space. (Windows ! Try doing that!)
The FC 5 comes with two applications which include; Pup and Pirut which provide relief from the previous cumbersome updating system. ( no more yum? )
While PUP checks for updates while Pirut a "Search" facility and a full list of available or installed packages. It includes new versions of X11 & GCC and the addition of gnome-mount, Gnome User Share, Ekiga, LVM and Gnome Power Manager. One can’t help appreciating they included Classpath, the free Java re-implementation. The only drawback one can think of is the Bluetooth UI on FC5 which is only good for basic file exchange and the lack of GUI for A2DP, printing or hands free profiles but who cares.
Windows And Microsoft - eat your heart out.
Pros:
- Great decreased memory requirements
- Faster to load and operate than before
- Enhanced Xen & SELinux support
- New package management tools
- Mono and Beagle are included
- Software sound mixing works
- Free as in speech Java stack

- Suspend-to-RAM didn't work as advertised
- No phone tools (PDA support hit and miss)
- A pain to install non-free stuff manually
- No iMovie/iDVD-style applications
- No UI for most Bluetooth profiles
- No Gnome menu editor included
- No Fast User Switch applet (like Windows XP style)
