Intel Corp has always believed in taking the unbeaten path and has been a huge supporter of less power-hungry chips and Wi-Fi and WiMax technologies. Now they are going to amalgamate both Wi-Fi and WiMax on the same radio chip, code-named Ofer, it will be ready by the next three years. With this Intel chip, which combines both Wi-Fi and users will be able to switch between local hot spots and regional network.
WiMAX is an acronym that stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, a certification mark for products that pass conformity and interoperability tests for the IEEE 802.16 standards. WiMAX is a standards-based wireless technology that provides high-throughput broadband connections over long distances. IEEE 802.16 provides up to 50 km (31 miles) of linear service area range and allows connectivity between users without a direct line of sight.
Intel a strong believer in WiMax technology is working overtime to release various products based on it. WiMax delivers much wider coverage than Wi-Fi and Intel plans to start selling a WiMax PC card very soon. By these cards consumers can take full advantage of WiMax at home. Another way to expand Wimax is making them available for portable devices especially in places like Middle East, Asia, and Africa where broadband is still in its infancy. In a press statement Mr. Maloney from Intel Corp was heard saying "Our growth opportunity on the Internet is absolutely global," thus highlighting the fact how serious Intel is about Wimax.
