NVIDIA announced its plan to the buy out the Finnish graphics company Hybrid Graphics which mainly develops graphics for mobile devices. In this surprising acquisition, one thing is clear, that NVIDIA is looking to expand its foothold in the Mobile Phone Industry. Hybrid will retain its identity and act as a wholly owned subsidiary. Though the terms are undisclosed it will continue to offer its Mobile Framework (MF) graphics engine, which is due for a major upgrade in Q2,2006.
Some of Hybrids customers include Nokia, Ericsson, Philips, Samsung and Symbian and for NVIDIA this deal is a way to increase the take-up of its graphics chips, which MF will be able to do. MF6 was released in Q2 2005 and provides OpenGL ES, Direct3D Mobile, Open VG and Java compatible 2D and 3D rendering engine and can also leverage on-board DSPs and other acceleration chips. The new MF 7 will add OpenGL ES 2.0 support to the package.
