Okay. Downloading multimedia content illegally is the problem that every company is facing now and the only way for them to tackle it, is to join in this phenomena. Thus we saw the inception of Apple iTunes store, Yahoo music online stores among others. Now it’s not just about the Music and even Videos like TV serials, movies are also available online for a nominal fee. Thus this explains Universal Studios move to launch the "download-to-own" service that will allow users to download and keep copies of a film they purchased over the Internet
By availing this service, users for a fee of £19.99 ($34.85) will be able to download 2 copies of the film they wish to purchase. Then the copy can be played on the PC and the other can be used on various portable devices. To top it all, a copy of the DVD would be sent to the user via mail. The service starts on April 10, with King Kong being the first film offered. If download-to-own is successful in the UK, a US launch may be in the future.
"One of the things that came out very clearly — although everyone wanted an opportunity to download quality product, the majority of consumers wanted the safety of a physical product as well," said Eddie Cunningham, regional managing director for Universal Pictures International. "Consumers said to us they were three times as likely to subscribe to this if there was a physical copy included."
