Apple and Microsoft don’t really go hand in hand. Or do they? With the new Intel-based Mac such as the new iMac, Mac mini and Mac Book Pro (MBP) and the new Boot Camp software, both the companies have proved the cynics wrong. For those who are not aware Boot Camp is a public beta download and it is free for now. But that doesn’t mean Apple is not serious about developing Boot Camp further and that it’s a one off. Apple has promised that it will integrate Boot Camp as a standard feature in the next addition of Mac OS X operating system, Leopard.
So what exactly is Boot Camp and what’s with the army inspired name? I don’t know the answer to the second one but we sure can answer the first question.
Mac for years had always been elusive and now with Boot camp, it hopes to appeal to the masses as you can buy a Mac system, operate OS X and while running Windows. Most of the applications which were designed only for Windows now can be used by Mac users like for egg the .exe format and other applications related to mobile phones, cameras and PDAs. Also now Mac may finally have again a reputation of being a gaming platform because of the Intel's Core Duo processors and the Boot camp software. Thus in a nutshell Boot camp regardless of the name is pretty neat software by Apple unless the users dont' like the smell of it.
