Seagate Technology has just launched the Cheetah 15K.5 hard drive which isthe worlds fastest 15K drive. It would be available in capacities up to 300 gigabytes and the hard drive provides a lower Total Cost of Ownership when it comes to tasks like e-mail, Internet, and e-commerce. It is also capable of delivering Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) reliability rating of 1.4 million hours at full duty cycle.
"Datacenter storage requirements, on average, are increasing 55%-60% per
year based not only on internal business processing needs, but also the increasing demand to deliver content to a growing number of digital devices worldwide," said Dave Reinsel, director of storage hardware research at IDC. "Whether it be for entertainment or business, products like Seagate's new Cheetah 15K.5 provide companies an opportunity to reinforce their enterprise storage backbone with high performance and high capacity disk drives."
The Cheetah 15K.5 hard drive is also the world’s first enterprise hard drive with perpendicular recording which helps in delivering twice the capacity of current 15K drives.. The Cheetah 15K.5 has a 15K RPM which results in 30 percent more I/O's-per-second and more than 20 percent faster response times when compared to other 3.5-inch 10K RPM drives.
