Typhoon PSC Personal Supercomputers for Home Use
tyan_superPC_2_r.jpgThe Tyan Typhoon PSC Personal Supercomputers is one of those things I could not have imagined 16 years ago. Having a mini super PC the size of 2 normal desktop PCs, with a noise factor 45dB, 64GB RAM and up to eight processors is simply heaven as I was happy with a 80286 CPU playing GODs at that time.

Times have changed...I frown now when I have to use PCs with less than 1GB of RAM and this Tyan super PC is god-sent. I can even solve crazy complex maths questions or contribute more power to the SETI initiative in my own house.

Tyan Typhoon PSC Personal Supercomputers features :

1. Supports Linux and Microsoft's Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003.
2. Multiple Typhoon PSC systems can be daisy-chained to form a super cluster.
3. Comes with AMD Opteron 200 series processors or Pentium D processors.
4. There are 8 Gigabit Ethernet ports and capacity for 4 Serial ATA HDD devices.
5. The AMD model accommodates up to 64GB of DDR400/333 registered memory, with the Intel model taking up to 32GB of DDR2-667/533 unbuffered memory.

Tyan is developing further Typhoon PSC models based on the Pentium 4 and the recently-announced Intel Xeon 5100 series processors (Woodcrest), with high performance FBD registered memory. Availability is expected at the end of the third quarter of 2006. "This is another big step forward for supercomputers," said Smith. "The world's first supercomputer, installed in 1977, was 160 mflops (430 times slower than the Typhoon PSC), the size of a small car, required its own power supply and cooling system, and cost almost US$9 million."
