Sony Electronics Asia Pacific has just launched the first single-layer 25GB Blu-ray Disc media which will be available in Singapore by June 2006. The company will also launch a 50GB Blu Ray Disc soon and these drives are perfect for consumers who want to store large multimedia files like video clips, music and for data back-up. These next generation discs can store up to 5 times more data when compared to the traditional media discs like DVD. However these discs cannot be played on a normal DVD player and requires a Blu-ray Disc media drive which is also seen in the latest VAIO AR series. Its going to be hard as compatibility issues will be hurting consumers pocket for awhile and a lot will adopt the wait and see attitude before Blue-ray discs become hot items.
The new discs are capable of transfer rates of up to 72 Mbps (9MB/second) and can store 2 hours and 15 minutes of video at a bit rate of 24Mbps or 10 hours and 30 minutes at 5Mbps. These discs all feature the novel Sony AccuCORE™ technology which provide reliability, durability and enhanced disc protection. These discs are also Stain-resistant and according to Sony have a lifespan of about 30 years or more. The new Discs also has superb temperature durability as humidity and high temperature in most Asia Pacific regions can damage and warp discs. The susceptibility to warping of Sony's Blu-ray Disc media is about half of that of a normal CD or DVD.
The Blu-ray Disc media is layered with a scratch-resistant high performance coat to prevent scratches on the disc when not properly handled which may cause inaccurate reading of data. The low electrostatic charge on the Blu-ray Disc media reduces the amount of dust adhering on the disc that can deter playback and interfere with recording. Inevitable fingerprints and pen marks may hinder reading and writing of data onto the disc and Sony has implemented a resistant coating to repel such marks.
