Transcend Information has unveiled its latest DDR2-533/667 Fully Buffered DIMM memory module (FB-DIMM) which is just around 1.2 inches high, but promises to be a heavyweight champion when it comes to performance and functionality. The 512MB/1GB modules would be able to support the future high-end servers and meet the highest specifications. The FB-DIMM is compatible with the latest Intel CPU’s which include a built-in FB-DIMM memory controller. The product uses 64Mx8 Fine-Pitch Ball Grid Array (FBGA) chip and a DIMM heat-spreader which prevents the system from heating up and keeps performance stable. That’s a pretty cool idea.The FB-DIMM when compared to regular registered DIMM is a better performer. This is mainly because of the better communication between the memory controller (chipset) and the module is serial which also eliminates the need for numerous pins. The FB-DIMMs are also capable of reading and writing simultaneously which translates into faster data rates. Overall, I think this Transcend new RAM modules are pretty cool and would be suitable for high end servers.
