Don’t worry, Microsoft is not preparing for a marathon as the picture above may suggest. The company is actually all geared up to meet the needs of high performing and demanding environments which involves engineers, scientists, and researchers who require high end usage. Therefore they have released a super fast Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 operating system made specifically for cluster-based supercomputing systems which traditionally utilize off-the-shelf computer components.
Microsoft wants a piece of the market which has traditionally been dominated by UNIX and Linux systems. According to MS, this new OS is perfect for I.T. workers as it integrates into the enterprise Windows infrastructure and makes tasks like data mining or credit-risk analysis a breeze.
Jupiter Research analyst Joe Wilcox said that, having solidified its position in the low-end and midrange server spaces, Microsoft sees an opportunity in this specialized market. "This is uncharted territory for the company, in a market where it is not competing against itself," he said.
The company is also working closely with a number of industries, educational and research institutions to develop applications for Compute Cluster OS, including oil and gas reservoir simulation, vehicle design, and bioinformatics.
