The new ASUS W2J is ASUS's top-of-the-line notebook offering and coming from a company (ASUS Computer International) that used to deal with motherboards and power supplies only, is commendable. The ASUS's W2J is priced at $2,199 but it’s a reasonable price that comes with superb video and performance and comes preloaded with Windows XP Media Center edition. The W2J is basically a mobile home theater, incorporating all features found in media center PCs. It's a sleek notebook computer that's only about one inch high, yet it's packed with every conceivable feature including a 17-inch widescreen display and built-in TV and FM tuner. Accessories such as a media center remote control, headphones and all adapters and cables are included.
The W2J is built around Intel's latest dual core technology. The notebook features a 2 GHz Intel Yonah M T2500 dual-core processor, an Intel 945PM chipset and 1 Gbyte of DDR2 667 MHz memory. The 17-inch WXGA+ display has a native resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels. Graphics are processed by an ATI Radeon x1600 with 256 Mbytes of VRAM. Abundant storage is provided by a 100 Gbyte hard drive, and the slot-load dual-layer DVD multi recorder can read and write to all current types of media.
Other features include gigabit Ethernet, 802.11 a/b/g wireless, a V.92 modem, a 54mm Express Card slot, Bluetooth 2.0 and a 4 in 1 memory card reader. Ports include three USB, one FireWire, VGA and S-Video out. Stereo speakers along with a bottom subwoofer produce powerful sound for a notebook, and SPDIF and surround outputs complete the audio system.
