Apple Stops Selling $899 iMac to Individuals
imac_899.jpg

Last week DailyTech reported that Apple introduced a new iMac priced at $899 for education customers. The new iMac had similar specifications to Apple's current 1.83GHz Core Duo iMac, which is for sale at $1,299. Today, Apple has yanked the original $899 iMac page for an updated one that indicates the computer will no longer be sold to individuals -- whether they're a student or a teacher.

According to Apple, the $899 iMac will now only be sold to education institutions only. Apple originally indicated that the iMac would be immediately available to education customers, which is usually what the company says for other education-only Macs discounts and products.

Several analysts think that Apple made the change due to a possible cannibalization of its more expensive iMacs. An Apple spokesperson told reporters that the $899 iMac "is not available to individual education customers, it is for institutions only." No other specific reasons were given. Gee, what a dud now !
