Intel Corporation (INTC) has released 5 new products for the Dual-Core Itanium 2 Processor 9000 series. Better known by its codename, Montecito, these new processors target the high-end computing platforms around the world. Current single-core versions perform at 50% of the Montecito's capabilities, and consume 2.5 times more in performance-per-watt tests when compared side by side.
The new 9050 model comes with a couple of complete processing cores and has three times the cache versus the current Itanium processors. Each processor is able to execute up to 4 instructions via Intel's patented Hyper-Threading technology. Each Dual-Core Itanium 2 processor is packed with over 1.7 billion transistors, delivering robust virtualization capabilities while enhancing cache reliability and various mainframe-like capabilities. These chips also deliver performance at a system scale that leaves competing RISC architectures in the dust. Intel's new Itanium 2 processors will ship from today onwards, with the Dual-Core Itanium 2 processor 9050 retailing for $3692 while the Itanium 2 single core processor 9010 will be going for $696.
Pros : Extremely fast next-generation technology
Cons : Very expensive
