Via Technologies has announced its new VX700 chipset that targets the handheld device market, including PDAs and upcoming handheld computers. The VX700, being a single-chip, is able to shrink the form factor of a mobile device by up to a whooping 40% - that means we will be getting more internal space in the handheld device for other functions, since too small a screen would spell disaster as you cannot do much with it.
The VX700 was designed to work in tandem with the Via C7-M, the flagship model of Via's Intel-compatible low-power CPU range. The VX700 will be sampled during the third quarter. The 35mm x 35mm package comes with Via's UniChrome Pro II graphics core, a hardware-based video support with LVDS DVI outputs, integrated audio, and a DDR2 memory controller. This bodes well for handheld devices as it will further enhance battery life in handheld devices while providing ample processing power for your everyday PC tasks.
Pros : Reduces form factor of mobile device, longer battery life
Cons : Untested technology could prove to be unstable
