Cornice announces new range of MicrodrivesCornice was one of the first few companies to offer the Microdrive, and they have not sat behind doing nothing the past few years. The company is back with a vengeance with its 5th generation of small form factor hard drives that measures just 1" thick while offering a maximum capacity of 12GB of storage real estate. This power efficient hard drive was designed in such a way that it takes up only 5% of an MP3 player's battery when in use. It comes with a range of safety designs that ensures the drive operates smoothly even when the owner is engaged in physically demanding activities such as jogging or sky diving. The Drop Safe technology will place the hard drive head into an active latch if it detects that a drop is imminent, even while writing and reading data. This new hard drive is available in capacities of 8GB, 10GB, and 12GB and weighs just 11.5 grams. According to the storage capacity, they measure 40mm × 30mm × 3.5mm to 4.75mm. The new Microdrives will begin to ship in Q3 2006 for for $85 each in batches of 10,000 pieces.
