IBM has announced its upcoming Socket 1207 Opteron rack and blade servers at the ongoing Siggraph event in Boston. The 1U rack server does not contain any
hot-swappable drives as found on its predecessor, the eServer 325/326. Instead, the 1U offers support for a pair of internal S-ATA drives instead. There are some plus points to the 1U including support for a single-slot 16x PCI-Express card and an 8x PCI-Express slot that can be used by users who want to utilize an upgraded RAID, network, or an additional specialized solution. RAM options are aplenty as you get to choose from a dozen DDR2 slots, where 6 slots are reserved for each of the two processors. Another server on display at the convention will succeed current Opteron blade solutions as it uses the HTX connector to expand a single slot blade into a multi-slot blade, essentially providing an upgrade from a dual-processor solution to a quad-processor solution.Pros : Next generation rack and blade servers
