Back in the early 90s, CD-ROM drives were all the rage and games like Rebel Assault wowed gamers with its multimedia effects, although the gameplay left a lot to be desired. Manufacturers also touted the speeds in these CD-ROM drives, offering ever increasing speed increments at a dizzy pace. First came the 2x drive, followed by the 4x, and then the 8x, and the madness stopped at 52x (thankfully). LG looks set to take the same path by offering its Super Multi Blue (GBW-H10N), a 4x Blu-ray internal PC writer that writes data at a maximum speed of 18Mbps. This is pretty redundant when you think about it since current Blu-ray rewriteable discs exhibit slow-writing capabilities that cap the maximum speed at 2x. If you want to be prepared to meet the future, then purchasing the Super Multi Blue drive would be a prudent choice, but otherwise sticking with its competitors who are half as fast is a more prudent option. Pricing and availability details are currently unknown.
