AMD, who for a long time has played second fiddle to Intel, has dropped hints to motherboard manufacturers that they plan to bring forward the launch of their new

quad-core K8L desktop platform to Q3 next year instead of the originally scheduled date of 2008. The quad-core desktop processor, dubbed Altair, will be manufactured using the 65nm process and features a clock speed between 2.7GHz to 2.9GHz. The Altair will also come with Hyper Transport 3.0 technology, but the K8L platform will be backwards compatible with K8 motherboards that run on Hyper Transport 1.0 as well. AMD is setting a target for these new quad-core processors to account for one tenth of its shipments for mainstream and higher end products by Q3 2007, hoping to double that percentage by the end of next year.
Pros : Backwards compatible with K8 platform, quad-core, 65nm manufacturing process
Cons : Release date is tentative
