Is the war over before it even began? That could be the case with the new Versatile MultiLayer Discs (VMD) from New Medium Enterprises (NME). The VMD platform is the first low cost, true High Definition medium solution in the world that uses current red laser technology and DVD industrial infrastructure. It is capable of 1920 x

1080i/p High Definition playback at up to 40 Mbps bit rate via the 20 GB-40 GB Red Laser optical discs. In addition, the players and burners remain alone and computer embedded, having no trouble being backwards compatible with DVDs and CDs alike. NME has already developed a manufacturing process which produces very high yields, making the VMD a very viable option to Blu-ray and HD-DVD at a much lower price point. The new VMD discs come with up to 10 different layers, and NME has developed its very own player which can read and write these discs and will license such technology to mainstream consumer electronics companies. The first prototype production line that utilizes NME's technology will begin in early 2007.
Pros : Uses existing red laser technology, high yields will mean lower cost for consumers
Cons : Unproven technology
