On Thursday, Intel has begun production at its first 45-nm fab, based in Chandler, Arizona. Intel confirmed the first 45-nm processor, the quad-core Penryn QX9650, will be released on November 12.
The 45-nm process technology is said to be more efficient in terms of energy consumption and increased performance. The 45-nm processors will be manufactured using a Hafnium-based high-k material which will reduce the amount of electrical leakage and will provide up to a 20 percent more value.
The Penryn QX9650 comes clocked at the 3GHz speed, with 1.33GHz front-side bus and 12MB of L2 cache. For this CPU, Intel included new SSE4 instructions. This one is the second quad-core CPU after the QX6850 model.
Intel has launched the 45-nm processor before its big rival AMD, which also announced a new line of processors.

Let the 45nm wars begin! I'll be interested to see AMD's response. Welcome again Mihnea.
