Microsoft plans to release 8 new versions of its Windows Server 2008, three of them including the hypervisor technology or Hyper-V. The Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter editions of Windows Server 2008 will be available with and without Hyper-V, both in 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
"When Windows Server 2008 ships next February, those versions that have Hyper-V will include the beta bits for that, and those will be updated to the final version when that ships within 180 days," said Brad Anderson, general manager for the Windows and Enterprise management division.
The Windows Server 2008 Standard with Hyper-V will retail for $999 and features five CALs (Client Access Licenses) and $971 without Hyper-V. The Enterprise version with Hyper-V will be priced at $3,999 and comes with 25 CALs and retails for $3,971 without Hyper-V. And at last the Datacenter edition will cost $2,999 per processor with Hyper-V technology and $2,971 without.
On the other hand, Windows Web Server 2008 will cost $469, but only designed as a single purpose Web server, while the Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based systems will cost $2,999 per processor. It is optimized for large databases and line-of-business and custom applications. These versions don't include the Hyper-V technology. The company told that a new standalone hypervisor-based server virtualization product that complements the Hyper-V technology will be released.
Also the customers could find useful the System Center Server Management Suite Enterprise Edition license, that provides management for entire server life cycle with one purchase.
