Microsoft prepares the launch of Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Windows XP. The SP3 is expected for release sometime in the first half of 2008. Even Windows Vista has got an update with the SP1 it remains far behind the XP's popularity.
A team of software passionates tested SP3 with OfficeBench and obtained a 10% performance boost versus the same configuration running under Windows XP w/Service Pack 2. They used a Dell XPS M1710 test bed with 2GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 1GB of RAM and discrete nVidia GeForce Go 7900GS video.
The new SP3 will contain the following features according to the folks from Bit-Tech:
- New Windows Product Activation model
- Network Access Protection modules and policies
- New Microsoft Kernel Mode Cryptographic model
- New "Black Hole Router" detection
It contains 1,073 patches and hotfixes, 114 of which being security related. The good performances expected from SP3 will make XP more stronger and eventually harder to be replaced by Windows Vista.
The news was well welcomed by the software specialists. Not everybody likes Vista, because of low performances. Me neither!

I hate Vista too. It may be pretty, but looks alone aren't enough. And this Service Pack makes me less willing to switch. I posted on this not too long ago. Check it out.
