I have written before about solid state drives. They are faster than the regular spinning hard drives, they use less energy and they are lighter too. Toshiba Corporation has announced today its new line of NAND-flash-based solid state drives. They are developing three SATA2 models for notebooks: 32GB, 64GB and 128GB.
Toshiba's drives use the multilevel-cell (MLC) NAND flash memories. Its engineers have created a 128GB density drive in a 1.8 inch form factor. The MLC technology had boosted read-write speeds and performance levels. The drives reach 100 Mbps reading speed and 40Mbps writing speed. As you may know, the flash memory is said to have a short life, but the Newlaunches editors sustain that Toshiba's drives provide 1,000,000 hours operating life. That would be around 115 years. Yeah, right! It sounds crazy, but I wouldn't mind if they are capable.
The drives will be displayed at Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, from January 7th to 10th. The mass production is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2008. Consequently, next year we will see some powerful notebooks on the market.
