A great news comes from Samsung Electronics, which claims it has developed the fastest memory chip in the world. The new GDDR5 is said to be capable of transmitting data at 6Gbps. The GDDR5 memory chip was targeted for use in graphic cards and game consoles. Samsung promises the memory is able to deliver an aggregate image data bandwidth of 24 Gbps, much better than the available 512 Mb 4.0 GHz XDR memory which does only Gbps.
Mueez Deen, marketing director at Samsung Semiconductor told: “We’re pushing image enhancement to a limit never before realized, enabling the smoothest, clearest animation that gamers have yet to experience.”
Samsung plans to release the GDDR5 memory chip in the first half of 2008. GDDR5 will be definitely more power efficient than GDDR3 - Samsung claims a 20 percent power reduction - but doesn't compare it with the GDDR4 chip. The new GDDR5 memory will operate at 1.5 volts.
Samsung has already sent samples of the new GDDR5 chip to “major graphic processor companies”. The company intends to capture more than 50 percent of the high-end PC graphics market by 2010.
