How to Reduce Windows Vista's Size from 15GB to 1.4GB

We all know that Windows Vista consumes a lot of resources. It reduces your PC's performances in terms of storage, memory and processor. Microsoft recommends 15GB of hard-disk space to install the OS. For some people that could be too much. A Croatian student, Dino Nuhagic wondered "Who can justify a 15GB operating system?" And he did something about it. Nuhagic developed a software called vLite that can strip Vista of useless components.

vLite is a free software and allows users to choose Vista components, hot fixes, drivers, and even language packs are installed. Then it builds a disk image that can be burned to a DVD. The software can reduce Vista to 1.4GB, the effect being the performance.

"Why did I do it? Well, it's performance and work environment," Nuhagic said when asked why he came up with vLite. "Performance, that's easy to explain. The less things running, the more responsive the OS."

However, if you thought of using this software, you should know it is destined for average users at least. Besides, Microsoft does not recommend using any tool to strip out applications from Windows Vista, because you can damage it. Use it or not, it's your call!

Works great, thank you for the tip!

You're welcomed!

15 gb install is nothing. People need to stop being such cheap asses and upgrade their PCs. PC parts are cheap.

If you are smart enough to want to use this, then you are probably dumb enough to do so.

Guys, I was showing a way to make Vista faster. However this practice is not recommended by Microsoft, so it's your choice to use it or not. If your PC offers great performances running Vista, then it's fine, but if Vista slows it you might want to use vLite.

"15 gb install is nothing" - yes hdd's are getting larger and cheaper but that still does not excuse 15GB for bloatware OS.
A 15GB OS is the reason Vista craps out with low ram and runs slow all that bloatware bells and whistles requires running more apps simultaneously running more apps requires more ram. solution = remove the useless crap to make a streamlined OS that uses less ram meaning less paging for faster performance.
People (myself included) have been stripping XP for years to make it faster by removing bits

Eh... I don't get the point. Vista uses only 10gb of my drive, and who cares? That's 1/25th of my hard drive, which is currently 65% empty. While this is quite useful, it takes away from the functionality that Vista has. This is why people have problems with OS (like not being able to get a new printer installed). Great idea, but if you miss 15 gb, you shouldn't have Vista in the first place. And what's the deal with speed? My computer is fast as living hell, and it cost me $500. For years it has baffled me why people are obsessed with saving hard disk, ram, and processor power when they never actually see any improvement. 15% free or 90%, it's all the same people.

Lighten up man, all he is doing is showing people how to get the best bang for the buck. why should you be forced to run out and spend more money on a computer or parts when the one you have can be made to run faster by removing unnecessary things from the OS. it is not a drive issue it is a performance issue. Personally, I have an 8 terabyte raid 5, size is not an issue, however performance is.

oh and i forgot to mention the 16 gigabytes of ram, it all cost about 6000 so why should i run out and buy something new when i can make what i have run better

here is a perfect video for you

This may not be too useful for people with desktops and upgradeable storage, but I run Vista on a laptop. The biggest hard drive made for my model is less than 100GB. If I didn't think this might mess up my install I might try it.

As I said above Michael, Microsoft doesn't recommend to use this software, but if you think you could manage to work things out you might give it a try. Success!

Hi, i ve Installed Vlite but I couldnt get where windows files installation are located.... can anyone can shw me where they are installed in wich folder....ThnX

like he said not to be used by dumb asses, this worked a treat thanks a lot. Cuts out loads of crap i never use and i dont have any problems with installing new devices either but still my Xp boot still runs rings around Vista the only reason i have it is to play halo, still a great little util i give it 5 stars
