India’s government plans to expand the broadband network up to 20 million lines by 2010. Currently, the Indian territory is woefully un-covered. Thus, two major carriers have joined forces to fulfill government's demand. Soma Networks Inc. partnered with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., India’s state-owned and largest telecommunications company to create the WiMax network.
The project will be developed in three major states of India, providing access for 250 million potential customers. “The fact that we’ve got the richest states, (BSNL) is hoping for our success so they can expand to other states", explained an official.
The Indian WiMAx network will provide broadband access and voice services in urban, suburban and rural areas and it will cover 400 cities. The network will be able to deliver up to 1.5 megabits per second for downloads and a few hundred kilobytes per second for uploads. Soma has announced it has already started to build the new network.
