Nowadays, the external drives are more common than a few years ago. Among the many external solutions the most used today would be the USB drives, eSATA and FireWire drives. The Serial ATA International Organization promises a new power solution for external Serial ATA drives. They will try to integrate the power cable with the data cable using the same pin technology. Today's eSATA drives utilize a power cord and a separate Serial ATA cable.
The necessity for a single cable comes from competition. Users prefer the simple USB drives or FireWire technologies to eSATA. The Power-Over-eSATA technology would be able to reinvigorate the production of external storage solutions based on SATA drives.
The SATA-IO president Knut Grumsrud hopes that the new technology will be available for the second half of 2008. Currently no manufacturers have announced products based on Power-Over-eSATA concept, but we should expect some new devices soon.
