Acer's Bid for Packard Bell Approved

The Taiwan-based company intends to acquire the Dutch computer maker Packard Bell. The deal has been approved by European Commission which agreed the deal "would not significantly impede effective competition".

Acer_logo.gif"The Commission’s examination showed that the proposed merger would entail horizontal overlaps for desktops and laptops, both for professionals and consumers, at the EEA and national levels," ruled the EC.

Acer has put a bid of $45.8 million at the end of January. The company intends to buy a 75% stake in Packard Bell's parent company PB Holdings. Now, Acer has become the third largest supplier of PCs in the world. The acquisition represent also a defensive market strategy because Acer wanted to prevent Chinese-based Lenovo company to gain a foothold in Europe.
