Fujitsu is the third company to manufacture 500GB hard drives for notebooks. The other two competitor are Hitachi and Samsung Electronics. The same technology was used by Fujitsu to create the high capacity hard drive. They have combined three disk platters, each with a 170GB capacity inside the drive.
Because of the third platter the hard drive thickness won't permit them to be installed on too many laptop models. Compared with two-platter models which are 9.5 millimeters thick thick, these drives have 12.5 millimeters. Thus, many users won't be able to upgrade for this capacity.
Fujitsu plans to begin selling its 2.5-inch drive in May. The drive has a SATA interface and offers transfer speeds up to 300MBps. Unlike its 5,400 rpm competitors from Hitachi and Samsung, Fujitsu's drive spins at 4,200 rpm. No pricing details were revealed till now.
