Intel Corp. has recently introduced the Intel Dual Socket Extreme Desktop Platform, also codenamed "Skulltrail". This platform supports two Intel quad core processors for a total of eight processing engines and a choice of multi-card graphics solutions. The results obtained in tests were stunning. Today's demand in high-definition creation requires more power for PC. And Intel is providing the solution.
"When it comes to delivering innovation to the ultimate enthusiast, our new 8-core desktop platform is a winner," said Jeff McCrea, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Digital Home Group.
The hardware configuration was based on Intel Core 2 Extreme processor QX9775 which offers 12MB of L2 cache, a fast 1600 MHz system bus and four cores running at a brisk 3.2 GHz. The two processors paired on the dual-socket Intel Desktop Board D5400XS and resulted in a 8-core platform. Each chip is launching with a suggested price of $1,499, while the motherboard is priced at $649. A total of $3,647 can be too much, but remember to add the 4GB of FB-DIMMs, a pair of high-end graphics cards, and a power supply capable of handling it all and you closely reach $5,000.
Game developers, 3D animators, HD video editors, all welcomed the 8-core platform created by Intel Corp. Although the price tag could scare you a little, Intel's platform is the ultimate hardware technology prepared for high performance workload. So, as I see it, Intel's 8-Core platform is more like a corporate solution for the moment.
