MetaRAM is a semiconductor manufacturer founded by AMD's former Chief Technology Officer Fred Weber. After operating in a stealth mode a few years, MetaRAM is ready to present its new technology. The company says they will deliver memory chips with densities of up to 8GB.
This is how it works. MetaRAM uses a 3D chip stacking technology to put extra SDRAM chips onto the DIMM, the result being a DIMM with two or four DIMMs worth of memory. They also use a secret pair custom chips that makes MetaRAM work.
MetaRAM utilizes the WakeOnUse technology that keeps all the SDRAM chips asleep unless they are needed. This technology provides better read and write times and reduces the power consumption to 2.5 watts. One of MetaRAM partners will come up with a server with 256GB of main memory for under $50,000, based on their chips.
