Canonical has announced the new Ubuntu Mobile tailored for MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices). MIDs are not exactly mobile phone but, handheld devices with 3D through OpenGL and with support for 3G cellular Internet access, Wi-Fi, and WiMAX. The mobile OS is based on Intel's Silverthorne technology and same as iPhone's OS, Ubuntu Mobile will have touch driven commands.
Ubuntu Mobile comes with a great range of features including:
- Full Web 2.0/AJAX fidelity, with custom options of Adobe Flash, Java
- Media playback so you can enjoy videos, music and photos with superior quality and easy navigation
- A suite productivity applications for anyone who is on-the-go
- Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Dailymotion, 3D games, GPS, maps, in short, the full Web 2.0 experience delivered into your hands as a compact and powerful device that's easy and fun to use
The open-source software will compete directly with Windows Mobile, but the market will become more interesting as Apple is expected to release a mobile version of Mac OS X. Canonical plans to release the software in late April this year.
