After the successful 700-MHz wireless spectrum auction, FCC plans a new auction regarding a free Internet access. The future winner would have the possibility to offer free broadband wireless Internet to most areas of United States. Although the plans for the auction have not been established, the rumors say that these frequencies could not transmit everything that Internet offers. Perhaps the free wireless broadband would serve for educational purposes and less for commercial ones.
Nevertheless some people believe the free wireless Internet plans are not realistic. To be fair I share this opinion, because is hard to maintain a wireless network without collecting some funds. Bill Ho, an analyst with industry research firm Current Analysis, explained that comparing free television and free Internet is not the same thing. Investments in wireless networks surpass the ones from TV business and advertisers are hard to get.
Another part of the future auction would be the D Block which was not sold because the reserve price of $1.3 billion was not met. The only bidder Qualcomm didn't show interest to pay more, as the winner should have shared a part of the spectrum with public-safety services. Consequently the D Block is still available.
