A survey of IT and business executives and manager showed an interesting fact about the open-source software and enterprise use. Almost 53 percent of the respondents told their company use open-source software and over 10 percent intend to do so in the future. The main reason for using the open-source solutions is the financial one, but not only. Many respondents said that the flexibility and the access to the source code are the main reason for their choice.
The programs which rank in the top of the most used open-source applications are: Linux (78 percent), infrastructure applications, such as back-end databases and Web servers (74 percent), and software development tools like Eclipse (61 percent). Moreover the productivity tools occupy an important place in companies IT applications. The most popular are office applications (OpenOffice.org, Zoho, Google Docs), collaboration tools, CRM tools, and ERP applications.
However some companies there are barriers to use open-source software. The greatest concern is the product support (45 percent), followed by security concerns (26 percent), and lack of support by management (22 percent). On the other hand, developers say that the biggest issue for a company to adopt an open-source solution is corporate preference for proprietary software, lack of device drivers and the need to learn a new set of skills.
